Those who read my blog know I am a big fan of family friendly movies, and this movie did not disappoint. The trailer makes it look like this movie is about an underdog team that begins to win, but it is so much more than that. I like how the movie portrays the topic of Asperger's Syndrome in a respectful way and in a way that shows kids (and adults) that being different than other people is okay and everyone should be treated with kindness and respect. I also like how the movie shows different kinds of growth in Mickey, the coach, the teammates, and Mickey's parents.

3 Favorites Thursday--Valentines

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hope your day was filled with family, food, laughter, joy and thankfulness.

Here is a Thanksgiving turkey craft my nieces and I made to decorate for Thanksgiving dinner.

The girls started by coloring the turkey. It is just a circle for the body, a circle for the head, and legs. I cut out the beak and wattle and had the girls glue them on.

I drew the feathers on cardstock. They each cut out most of their own feathers and came up with things they are thankful for. I love seeing life and thankfulness through 3 and 6 year old minds!

When family came on Thanksgiving we gave them their own feathers to write what they are thankful for.

The girls were so proud of their turkey!

I have a secret to tell...I have been listening to Christmas music at home since October. :) Don't worry I am not one of those people who is a big fan of stores skipping Thanksgiving and setting out the Christmas decorations in October. I just can't resist Christmas music, I love it!

As soon as I downloaded FFH's "One Silent Night" album into my iTunes, the songs on it became favorites in my Christmas tunes playlist. The album is a good mix of classic Christmas songs and originals.

Modern Silhouette Nativity

It is finally November. Yay! Time to start getting ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I actually feel like I am on top of some Christmas decorations and presents this year, which is great because usually I am coming up with super Christmas ideas around January 1. ;)

I have been trying to come up with new ideas of things to make with my Silhouette machine. I want to use it and not just leave it collecting dust! All of my ideas lately seem to use the black vinyl. Maybe I will branch out soon, but I love this new project black vinyl and all!

I call it a Modern Silhouette Nativity. It is different than the nativity scenes you normally see at people's homes. This one can sit on a shelf, mantel, table, etc...or be hung on the wall!

For this project I used designs from the Silhouette store. Each frame was one design. I had to ungroup the shepherds and the wisemen to put them in the positions that I wanted them. I can find the specific names if anyone wants them, but it is probably easiest to just search for "Nativity" in the shop.

Here I Raise My Ebenezer

One of my favorite hymns is "Come Thou Fount." If you haven't heard this song, you can listen to it here. There is a part that say "Here I raise my Ebenezer; Here by Thy great help I've come" For a long time I wondered what in the world an "Ebenezer" was. I looked it up and it is actually a reference to 1 Samuel 7:12 in the Bible. Right before this passage God had rescued the Israelites from the Philistines. "Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far has the LORD helped us."' That stone was to remind the people of how God had helped them. This isn't the only time that the Israelites used stones to remember God's help and faithfulness. In Joshua 4, after the Israelites crossed the Jordan river they placed 12 stones in the Jordan where they had crossed to remember what God had done. Joshua told the people the stones were "to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever." Joshua 4:6-7

The Israelites had a habit of forgetting about God and his faithfulness and needed reminders...not unlike me. How often do I complain about the way life is and sigh dreaming about how I want life to be? I often forget all of the blessings God has given me, all of the things he has brought me through, and how he has grown me. So I decided to make my own Ebenezer.

Supplies:
River Rock
Vase
Permanent Marker
Silhouette and Vinyl

I started with river rocks that I purchased at Michaels (with a coupon of course) and used a permanent marker to write down blessings, hard times God has brought me through, people God has placed in my life, opportunities He has given me, etc. When I finished I just placed them carefully in the vase.

I used my Silhouette SD to cut black vinyl to put on the vase. It says, "Here I raise my Ebenezer, Here by Thy great help I've come"

This Ebenezer is mostly a reminder for me, but if people ask me, "What do these stones mean?" I will be able to tell them about God's faithfulness in my life.

The Mighty Macs--Opening in theaters TODAY

If you read my blog you know that I love to support family friendly movies. The Mighty Macs is coming out in theaters today, Friday, October 21, 2011. I got to see a special online viewing of the movie and I have to tell you, I loved it! The movie stars Carla Gugino, Marley Shelton, David Boreanaz and Ellen Burstyn. The fact that it is based on a true story makes it even cooler to me. :)

Here is a little about the movie:
"It's 1971. Cathy Rush is a woman ahead of her time ... and she's about to embark on an adventure for the ages. A new era is dawning in the country and in collegiate athletics, where a national champion will be crowned for the first time in women's basketball.

In the lead up to this historical season, major universities are preparing their game plans to win that first title. Meanwhile a tiny all-women's Catholic college in Philadelphia has a more modest goal: find a coach before the season begins. Providentially, Cathy Rush is about to find Immaculata College.

Recently married, Cathy is dealing with the aftermath of a truncated playing career. While cultural norms would have her staying at home, she's willing to do the hard work necessary to help her new team reach their goals—or perhaps she's just trying to achieve her unfulfilled dreams through them.

From the beginning, her challenges are as imposing as the big-school teams Immaculata will face on the court. Cathy learns there is no gymnasium on campus, she receives little support from the school's Mother Superior, and the school is in dire financial straits. DIY Heart Crayons

There is nothing like a brand new box of crayola crayons. They look so pretty all nice and sharp. Pretty soon that box of new crayons becomes a box of dull crayons, broken crayons, not as fun to use crayons. :) I had a plastic shoebox full of these used and broken crayons so I made them new again by making chunky crayons.

I found this cute heart tray at Ikea for a few dollars. I peeled the crayons I wanted to use and broke them into pieces that would fit in the hearts. I kept the color families together because I can't stand the color you get when random crayon colors all mix together. After I took this picture I actually added a few more crayon pieces to each section. When they melt they will shrink down.

The next step is to put the tray of broken crayons in an oven at 250 degrees. I checked mine every 3-5 minutes to see how they were melting. It took about 15-20 minutes for the crayons to fully melt.

After the crayons cooled I just popped them out.

Fun new crayons!

These would be great to give as a Halloween treat for your child's class or tricker treaters (if you don't get a ton of trick or treaters) as an alternative to candy. I think mine will become Christmas gifts for the little ones on my list. :)

Three Favorites Thursday--Pinning from blogs

Sorry about skipping 3 Favorites last Thursday--They switched something with Pinterest and the sizing was all off when I tried to embed. I don't know what they did, but it is more of a pain to share photos now on the blog.

One of the cool things about Pinterest is that you can repin other people's pins or you can take a picture from a website or blog and pin your own. I think most bloggers would agree that it is pretty cool to have your ideas pinned. It feels good to have people recognize your hard work and it brings new people to your blog. Here are three favorite pins that I found on blogs and pinned (Not at all saying I was the first to pin any of these, just that I hadn't seen them on Pinterest before I pinned them.)

What Is He Thinking?? Book Review and Giveaway

In the past, I only knew of Rebecca St. James as a singer, even though she has written multiple books. I admire the way she is known for taking a stand for abstinence. She even has a song called, Wait For Me that was written to her future husband (She actually just got married this past spring, but wrote the song not knowing who her husband might be.) I was excited to see what she had to say in her newest book, What Is He Thinking??

Here is a description:

In WHAT IS HE THINKING??, Rebecca interviews a range of men from high-profile types to the guys next door, men that every woman can relate to. Although the interviews focus on single guys ages 20-35, Rebecca also includes words of wisdom from older mentors she respects who have been successfully married for years, people like her dad, life coach, and pastor.

I liked that the book shared viewpoints from many different men from different backgrounds and that Rebecca also shares some of her experiences in the book. The other thing I really like was at the end of each chapter there was a short section called "A Few Takeaways For You and Me." I liked the chapter summed up and important points highlighted.

I think this is a great book for girls in their late teens or early twenties.

Three Favorites Thursday--Pinterest Ideas I have tried

A person could spend all day on Pinterest finding ideas and pinning them with the intentions to do them later. I haven't had a chance to do many projects or recipes that I have pinned yet, but here are 3 ideas that I found on Pinterest and I tried.

This pin is actually focusing on the night stand. I however, focused on the bedspread that you can barely see and decided I NEEDED to have it. I just switched to a Queen sized bed, made a new headboard, and needed a bedspread for the bed. After posting this picture on Facebook, my friend, Theresa, identified the bedspread and where to find it. My mom grabbed it for me at Target on clearance. YAY!

Can I just say this is one of the best tips I found on Pinterest?!?! Before seeing this I had a huge gap and a person could see into my kitchen from my living room window, especially at night. It always bothered me. This tip totally fixed my problem. Here is my version

This last one I wouldn't necessarily call a favorite tip. The caption says "LESS Than $1 - DIY Wreath form!! Visit the plumbing dept at your nearest Hardware store - grab a six foot long piece of foam tubing for $.97!!" Great idea, right!?!

So I went to Home Depot and I bought the $.97 piece of foam tubing. I was so excited. I made this wreath The problem is that the foam tubing isn't sturdy enough and doesn't want to keep its shape. It might look okay in the picture right after I fixed it, but now it is more like an oval shaped wreath. Still cute, just not what I was looking for. Maybe there is a way to secure the tubing better so it would keep its shape?

Colorful Fall Wreath

My front door needed some fall cheeriness so I gave myself a mission to make a wreath as inexpensively as possible.

Here are my supplies:

Burlap: $2.39/yard Used less than 1/4 yard=$.60

Wreath: $.97 tubing from plumbing section of Home Depot. Used 1/2=$.50 (Will talk more about this tubing in a post later this week.)

Flowers $1.00 for a bunch. Used 2 bunches=$2.00

Total cost (without tax)=$3.10

First, I cut the tubing the size I wanted it and used packing tape tape the ends together to make a circle shape. I cut the burlap into about 3 inch strips and wrapped it around the wreath frame. I used a glue gun to attach the burlap. I then cut the flowers, arranged them how I wanted them, and glue gunned them on also.

Now I come home and smile when I see my cheery, colorful wreath!

Beady bracelet

This summer I shared that my SIL had shared beads with me. I posted a necklace I made out of some of them and mentioned that I had no idea what to do with the wooden beads that she sent. I know that wooden beads seem a little more popular lately (not really sure why), but I hadn't seen any ideas that would work with the beads I had.

Then I saw these bracelets from I Am Momma--Hear Me Roar and I knew my beads would be perfect for a bracelet just like them! My craft store didn't have fun colors of leather so I went with dark brown since I wear a lot of brown. I know this makes my bracelet a little bland, but I will keep looking for find more colorful leather colors.

I could make a tutorial, but Cheri did such a good job I will let you go to her blog for step by step directions. Here are a few pictures of my finished product.

THE SHUNNING movie review and giveaway

I saw the trailer for The Shunning, on a different movie I saw recently and I knew that I wanted to see it when it came out. When I was asked if I would review the movie of course I said yes! :) This movie is a Hallmark Channel movie. I don't know about you, but I can't even watch a Hallmark commercial without crying...sure enough, this movie was no different. The story drew me in and I felt like I was there, feeling for each character and their pain. When the movie ended, I wasn't finished. I wanted to know more and for the story to keep going!

Here is a little bit about the movie:
Before she succumbs to cancer, the dying wish of Laura Mayfield-Bennett is to be reunited with the daughter she never knew. Unfortunately, that daughter, Katie Lapp, is a member of the Amish order. Katie is about to be married, but uneasy about the path ahead. Now she discovers the secret her parents have kept from her: she's adopted.

The film is based on the celebrated first novel of the best-selling "The Heritage of Lancaster County" book series from author Beverly Lewis. Stars Danielle Panabaker & Sherry Stringfield.

Over The Top--Women of Faith

I don't even know where to begin my post about the Women of Faith Conference. The two day event was amazing and I was so blessed to be able to attend! I am just going to give a few highlights so I don't over-share for those who want to go yet...don't want to ruin all the surprises!

Lisa Whelchel--You may remember Lisa as "Blair" on The Facts of Life. Personally I was a bit young to watch that show when it was airing, but that's okay. :) Lisa talked about friendship and her struggles to learn how to be a friend and "pick" good friends as an adult. Some of what she said really hit home. Her book, Friendship for Grown-ups, is a new one on my "to read" list.

Mandisa--You may remember Mandisa from American Idol a few seasons back. She has since become a popular Christian music artist. Loved hearing a few of her songs and I plan to go look up more of her music. One of my past complaints at the Women of Faith conferences was that all of the speakers spoke about their husband and kids and seemed to be talking to the ladies in the audience with a husband and/or kids--which is great, but made me feel a little left out. Us single ladies have struggles too. I wanted to feel like I belonged at the conference even though I don't have a husband or kids. Mandisa got my attention when she sang "All the Single Ladies" in a medley of songs. She also shared a little of her struggle talking about having a "Single Awareness Moment" and going to food to fill the hurt instead of taking it to God. That was enough to make me go--someone understands! She didn't have to have a whole talk on being single, it was enough to make me feel like I belonged, like there was someone else like me there. I love how real her songs are which is fitting since the name of her album is What if We Were Real.

Patsy Clairmont--I have heard Patsy speak each time I have attended this conference. She is hilarious! I love hearing her talk even though usually my stomach hurts from laughing afterwards. I love how she can share hard stuff and make me laugh, and yet share deep biblical truth while doing it.
Our seats were close to the stage and "porch" where the speakers sit. I moved to a closer row for a minute to get a picture of the speakers standing together when Patsy walked up to the person nexted to me to thank them for coming. I asked her if she would be willing to take a picture with me and she graciously said yes!

     In college I heard a song that fit was I was going through and it has since become one of my favorite songs. "If You Want Me To" by Ginny Owens is one of the most played songs in my itunes library. That is why I was thrilled to be able to review her new CD Get In, I'm Driving, which comes out tomorrow, September 13.

Here is a little background about Ginny Owens:
     A three-time Dove Award winner, including the Gospel Music Association’s 2000 New Artist of the Year recipient, and multiple ASCAP Award winner, Ginny Owens has sold nearly one million albums. A top performer on the Christian radio charts with hits like “If You Want Me To,” “Free” and “I Wanna Be Moved,” among others, Owens’ music has impacted mainstream audiences at Lilith Fair, the Sundance Film Festival and the White House.      When I first started listening to the CD I was a little disappointed. The style of music was so different than I was expecting. Some of the songs have a blues or jazz feel to them and I just wasn't used to or expecting that.   I kept listening though and I am so glad that I did! Ginny writes her songs from the heart and the lyrics have depth, emotion, and meaning to them. After listening to the CD a few times I found myself singing the songs throughout the day.

    I can't choose just one favorite song so I will share a little bit of two songs

"Joined At the Heart" is a song that is written from the point of view of new parents talking to their baby. The chorus says:
"We are humbled to be*part of a greater story*written by the author of miracles and stars*and as this journey unfolds*there is one thing we know*God has made it so we are forever joined at the heart."

I also like "Lay It Down," check out these power packed lyrics:

Giant Flower Ring

Quite a while ago I read on a blog (not a clue which blog) how someone took a cute button and cut the shank off to make a ring. I saw this adorable flower button at Joann's and I knew it would be perfect for a ring!

The hard part was actually finding a ring blank for the flower. I had to have my Sister-In-Law mail me one that she had found in IL.

There is a specific tool to cut off the shank on a button, but I just used one of my jewelry pliers and cracked it off. I used Gorilla super glue to glue the flower onto the ring blank.

Super easy, super cute!

The Grace Card--Movie Review and Giveaway

     As a teenager the rule in our house was that if a movie had more than 3 swear words in it, it got turned off. It is important to be careful what kids watch, but I think it is just as important as an adult to be careful what I listen to and watch. I find it harder and harder to find movies that don't use bad language and are clean in content.
That is why I was so excited when I got the opportunity to review the movie THE GRACE CARD

     Do you remember the movie Fireproof? This movie is made by a different company, Graceworks Pictures in conjunction with Calvary Pictures, but inspired by and modeled after Sherwood Pictures (Fireproof, Facing the Giants, Flywheel). The website says, "this faith-based film brings together Church and Hollywood." I love that.

   This movie begins with a scene showing Mac McDonald's young son die. The main part of the story is set years later. Mac is still filled with anger, grief, and bitterness and his family is falling apart because of it. The anger and bitterness also come out in his job as a police officer hurting his chances for promotion and making others not want to work with him. Mac is given a new patrol partner, Sgt. Sam Wright.   Things get interesting as we see just how different Mac and Sam are. Sam, also a preacher, is trying to teach his congregation how to love the unlovable, but learns just how hard that is when dealing with his new partner.

I won't ruin the whole storyline, but I will tell you that the movie has a wonderful theme of forgiveness and giving and receiving grace.

I really liked this movie. I like that being a Christian was portrayed in a respectful way. I get tired of the movies that make Christians look like crazy lunatics. I also think this is a family a movie that you could watch with your teenage children. It has real issues that people deal with on a daily basis even if they have never dealt with the specific events in the movie. If I had to say one thing I didn't like it would be that I thought the ending came to an end too neatly, too quickly. The resolution came a bit too easily for me. Even so I would definitely recommend this movie without hesitation.

This movie is rated PG-13 for violence (there wasn't much violence) and thematic elements.

This movie is now out on DVD.

Bead Challenge #1

My Sister-In-Law, S. is into many of the same craft things that I am. She is the one that got me into beading/jewelry making. She recently received some beads as a gift that she had no idea what to do with. She split them up and sent me some beads with a challenge to make jewelry with them. I started with the easy ones--they look like pearls. :) The other ones are wooden beads and I have NO idea what to make with them. (Let me know if you see any cute ideas with wooden beads!)

The inspiration for this necklace started with the pendant. I noticed this silver pendant everytime I went into the jewelry section at Joann's. Finally I had a really good coupon and decided I had to buy it before it was gone.

I used silver seed beads in between the pearl-like beads to keep the silver throughout the necklace.
The clasp I used it my favorite kind--so easy to get the necklace on and off by yourself and not get your hair caught in it.

ROBERT PIERRE REVIEW AND CD GIVEAWAY

Do any of you remember when I reviewed a few songs I had heard by Robert Pierre? (If not, check out this post.) Well, his new CD "I'm All In" just came out and I get to review it AND I have a copy to give away!!

First of all, I have to say that I love the title "I'm All In." Robert says, "The Bible talks about how the eyes of the Lord are searching to and fro throughout the earth, searching for someone whose heart is wholly His, somone he can strongly support. This CD is me saying, 'I'm all in.'" I love seeing youth on fire for God and I love how the songs encourage that. The songs are described as "a collection of songs that enthusiastically and energetically worship God while wrestling with what it means to be a Christian in a world full of difficulty and joy, anxiety and excitement." Don't fear if you aren't "young" though--even though the artist is only 18, this CD is for all ages.

The song "Maker of the Stars" begins with these lyrics: "You know my every thought*You know my every move*You know the motive behind all that I do*You know my deepest fear*You know when I shed a tear*And when I'm hurting You're always there*You are the maker of the stars*The light in the dark*Your Word will never fade*And You, You've known me from the start*You see inside my heart*You love me anyway*The heavens scream of the works*That are all of Your hand*From the mountain tops of every land*You spoke and life came to be*You opened my eyes to see*And when I call you You, You answer me"

I have to say that I like this new CD even better than I liked the older songs I heard (and I really liked those) The music is still energetic, but a little more mellow and worshipful.

I received the CD just before heading on a road trip with a bunch of high schoolers so I popped it in while we were driving. Half of the kids were sleeping, but the ones that heard it liked it! Now that I am back home the CD has been put on my ipod and I am playing it right now!

Ruffle Fabric Dress

I have seen many projects lately using ruffle fabric. I decided to buy some and give it a try. I was thinking a skirt or pillow when I bought it, but I changed my mind when I held it up and decided to try a shirt/dress. I actually made this a few months back, but haven't had the time to take pictures and share it.

Here is the fabric. It was a little too thin for my comfort so I added thin stretchy knit of the same color that I had lying around as a lining.

I used a tank top that I liked as a pattern for this and just added the length I wanted. I have to say the ruffle fabric was a bit of a pain to cut. If anyone has any tips on cutting it, let me know!

After I cut the fabric I sewed the lining to the ruffle fabric before sewing the back side and front side together.

The dress reaches about mid thigh and I wear leggings with it.

I love that I made this and I love that it cost way less than buying it would have!

The Mysterious Benedict Society--Book Review

I decided to make a grading system for the books I review. Let me know what you think :) I might change it around a little, but for right now I will see how it works.

   As a substitute teacher it is fun to be in different classrooms and see what kids are reading. I happened to be in the same classroom 3 times while the read aloud book was The Mysterious Benedict Society. I couldn't wait to read what happened next! I knew that I had to read the whole book for myself.   I am not sure what the reading level is for the book, but the teacher read this book to a 5th grade class. I think it would be great for a 6th or 7th grader to read on their own.
   In the book, there are 4 kids who become a team of spies that infiltrate a school to stop a principal from trying to rule the world by sending hidden messages to people through tv and radio. They need to find out how he is doing it and stop him before time runs out. Along the way the kids have to learn to trust each other and work together as a team even when working alone sounds so much easier.
   The book has humor and suspense and is an all around great read. It definitely gets five stars.

If you like the book, I heard that it is the first in a series.

Lime Green Zippered Clutch

I made this clutch as a gift for someone graduating from high school this week. I thought it would be perfect for an ID, cell phone, keys, and some money while roaming around campus, to throw in a backpack on the way to class, or for a night out. :) The recipient said her favorite colors are lime green and aqua so I thought this was the perfect fabric for a little purse! (the aqua looks very blue on my screen, but it really isn't)

This was my first time sewing something with a zipper so I was a little bit nervous. I checked out these 2 zipper tutorials: Make it and love it and See Kate Sew Both have great instructions!

My First Silhouette Project

After pulling my Silhouette out of the box I had to wait to use it because I had real work to get done. I finally got to play around with the machine a bit and here are my first thoughts about it. First of all I LOVE IT! I can't wait to try out all sorts of things with it. With that said, I think that in order to like the machine you have to like to try things out and work to figure things out. I found the tutorials and instructions from Silhouette average to poor (I really wish they would work to improve them). Thankfully other kind people have posted tips, tricks, and tutorials. For example, to use the t-shirt vinyl you needed to flip the image backwards. It clearly said this needed to be done, just not HOW to do it. I searched the program for a button or something, but couldn't figure it out. I had to search online to find out how.

So here is my first creation with the Silhouette:

For those that aren't into geography, that is a picture of the state of California :)

The Silhouette store sells the states, but I used a graphic that I already had. I would love to give credit, but don't remember where I got it from. I like the little heart near the city I live in. The font is off my computer and called Aharoni.

Beaded Necklace

I think I have said this before, but I am a little bit of an eclectic crafter. I sew a bit, stamp some, make cards and scrapbook pages, paint things, I have tried quilting...and my newest crafty thing is jewelry making. I really started back in November, but I am pretty sure I haven't shared any of the jewelry I have made here on my blog yet. My favorite is a red and cream necklace...the first piece I ever made, but I will have to show that one in a different post. Today I am going to show you just a simple necklace that I made this week.

My mom gave me the medallion (is that the right word?) for this. Isn't it cute?! It is a little bit larger than I am used to so I wanted just a simple chain to go with it. I used brown seed beads and strung them on jewelry wire. At the top is the clasp and a crimp bead on each side to keep the beads from falling off.

Simple and inexpensive!

Music Review--Robert Pierre

   If you know me, you probably know that I am a big fan of Christian music. I am always interested in finding new Christian artists/bands so I was very excited for the recent opportunity to listen to 4 new songs from singer and songwriter, Robert Pierre. Robert is an 18 year old senior in high school...he is actually graduating this week!
   After listening to these songs many times over I would say I give them 2 thumbs up. I really like the peppy beats of his music.  This would be great music to listen to in the car in traffic because it would make me smile and keep me awake :).   I also really like the message in these songs. They aren't shallow, they have a deepness to them that I am shocked comes from a high schooler! In one song it says, "Any desperate day, one word I can pray, all I know to say JESUS. Screaming from my soul, I am giving up control, the only hope I know JESUS" Love that.

Sewing at an early age

I went to see my parents for Easter this past week and had a lot of fun hanging out with family. Unfortunately that means I wasn't crafting or sewing much, at least not fun things to share (I don't think you care about the pair of pants that I did a magnificent job of hemming ;) ) I did do a little bit of sewing with my mom and when I went looking for a pin cushion here is what I found...

Apparently I was QUITE the sewer at age ten--yikes! Here is a side view so you can see the stitching.

A pin cushion that only a mother would love. Fortunately my sewing has improved since then. :) Maybe I should make her a new one for Mother's Day.

Book Review--Max on Life

    Having read many books by this author was very excited for the opportunity to review Max Lucado's new book, Max on Life. The very first question in the book, basically, "How is God's love different from human love?" sparked my interest right away because it is a question that has come up in discussions with the high school girls that I mentor. I was interested to hear Max's answer. In this book Max answers 172 questions that people have asked him in person or in letters. Some of these questions are questions that new Christians might have, but others are questions someone who has walked with God for a long time might struggle with.
   One of the things I really like is that many of the answers in this book have scripture to back them up.  Scripture is truth. If someone gives me an answer to something it needs to match up with what the Bible (God) says. I know that sometimes scripture can be misinterpreted, which is why we need to be careful and read the Bible for ourselves and know what it says. I like how Max goes to the Bible when giving answers.
    This book is definitely not one you would read in a day. It is more like a resource to use or maybe something you would read a little bit of each day. Topics include heaven, family, money, abortion, worrying, prayer and much more. I like how the back has a topical index in case you are looking for a specific topic and also a scriptural index.

Love my new Purse!

There are a few blogs on my favorites list that I try to check out every week (sometimes it is everyday ;) ) for new stuff. I am Momma Hear Me Roar is one of them. A few weeks ago she decided to find a way to encourage people to give money to aid in helping Japan after the earthquake and Tsunami. She was (and still is!) offering the Tohoku Purse pattern to anyone who donates more than $8 to help relief efforts. Here is the link to see details if you are interested in donating. You don't have to donate through a specific organization, I donated through my church.

This purse is ADORABLE! The pattern is easy to read. I would definitely buy another pattern from Cheri.
Her pattern has a pleat on the front, but I have never been a pleat kind of girl (okay and maybe I didn't want to mess up my first try of this purse)

The finished purse is about 12" tall not counting the straps.

As usual, please ignore any threads still hanging in the pictures. It takes a few days for me to find them all and cut them and I didn't want to wait that long to take pictures.

As you can see I already started using it. By the way, that planner is a time.mine planner. I have used Dot Mine planners for the past few years and they are the best! I was not paid to say that, but if someone from time.mine sees this, getting a free one for 2012 would make me very happy. :)

Weekend Book Review, Choosing to See

I am in a book club at my church. We meet once a month and each month a new person chooses the book we will read for the next month. I love (usually) reading books from all sorts of genres, books that I wouldn't have picked up off the bookshelf and read without the encouragement of the book club. Click Here to read my review of the book I picked last time it was my turn.

Last month the lady who chose, picked a book I had considered choosing so I was excited to get to read it! I knew going in that Choosing to See, by Mary Beth Chapman was going to be a hard book to get through without crying. Well, I got to the dedication part and I was already crying!

In this book Mary Beth takes us through the ups and downs of her life through marriage, motherhood, adoption, and dealing with the death of a child. She is very honest about her thoughts, emotions, embarrassing moments...sometimes to the point of giving TMI. :) I think that is what makes her so likable though...she shares things that other women sometimes feel, but are afraid to let anyone know about. When I finished it was like I was reading the book of a friend or someone I felt I knew well.

If you have heard of Mary Beth's story you know that her youngest daughter, Maria, was killed in a heart breaking accident. Probably half of the book shares life after that life changing moment. My heart was so heavy reading the deep, raw, honest depiction of grief that the author and her family went through and still feels. I think the family realizes that God had big plans for them and plans for good to come out of losing Maria and yet reality is that living those plans has seemed unbearable many days. One of the things she says that stuck with me was that she had always told her kids that "God doesn't make mistakes." After the accident she had to decide if she still believed that and then live it out.

I would definitely recommend reading Choosing to See, just make sure to have a box of tissues nearby!

Freezer Stenciled Bean Bags Part 2

Here are the promised finished bean bags. If you are interested in how I painted the letters on see part 1 in this post.

Here are a few things I did in case you want to make your own.

* I made all of the letters lowercase. Like I said in my previous post I also painted them how they are written. These are made for kids who are learning their letters and I want them to learn the letters the right way.

*I made a dot at the bottom of each bean bag so the child can tell which way the letter goes--u and n, p and d look very much alike and I wanted the child to know which letter was which.

*Bean bags are about 4 1/2" square.

*I used a little less than 2/3 cup dried pinto beans in each one.

Freezer Stenciled Bean Bags Part 1

As a teacher I am big on making learning fun. I decided to try out alphabet bean bags as a gift for a young special someone. I plan to come up with a some games to go with the bean bags to make learning letters and to read fun! Today I am going to show how I painted the letters on each bean bag.

1. Print out the letters how you like them. I didn't use one specific font because I am big on letters looking how kids write them so I mixed and matched fonts to get each letter the way I wanted.

2. Cut a piece of freezer paper and put it on top of the letter. Make sure the waxy side is facing down. You should be able to see the letter through the freezer paper. Use a craft knife to cut the freezer paper.

3. Take the freezer paper and carefully iron it to the piece of fabric you want to paint. The waxy side will stick to the cloth. Make sure all of the edges are "stuck on" so paint can't leak through.

4. Carefully paint the letter. I used a foam brush to do this.
5. After the paint is dry carefully peel up the freezer paper.

That's all! So easy!

Weekend Book Review "Sidney & Norman"

    The book I am sharing for this weekend's book review is in my top ten favorite children's picture books. I love that it has a lesson that is meaningful for kids AND adults. The book is Sidney & Norman a tale of two pigs, by Phil Vischer (The Veggie Tale guy). I first heard the story in an elementary school chapel a few years ago. I recently heard it again during a talk for a high school youth group. The book fit both ages so well! After I heard it the last time I went online and bought 4 copies. One for me and 3 for gifts...that is how much I like this book.
The book is about two pigs who are next door neighbors--Sidney and Norman. Norman is a pig who has his life all in order. He is always on time, always dresses nicely, his house is neat, and he did/does well at school/work. He can't see why others can't just try harder and be like him. Sidney on the other hand is a mess. He is always late, his tie is never straight, his house is messy, and some mornings he doesn't even want to get out of bed.   Both Norman and Sidney get a letter from God telling them He wants to see each of them. Norman assumes God is going to tell him what a great job he is doing.  Sydney equates going to see God with being sent to the principals office, he is sure he is in trouble. I won't ruin the ending, but God has a message for each pig that day and both of them leave changed.   Whether you can relate with Norman OR Sidney (or sometimes one and sometimes the other), this book has a message of God's love for you too.

Not for camping, this Tent is for a Carseat!

I made this carseat tent for a friend's baby shower last spring. I waited to put it on my blog so I wouldn't ruin the surprise and then I forgot to share!

These tents are nice when the baby is sleeping so people don't try to disturb your baby when you are out and about. My friend that I gave it to shared that it is also great for keeping the baby dry on rainy days (while running from the house to the car, etc). The handles make it so you can grip the carseat handle easily and so the blanket doesn't slide off while carrying the carseat.

Ginormous Fabric basket

Last week I shared my desk into tv stand remodel. I originally wanted baskets on the bottom two shelves and spent a lot of time debating what size baskets and where to find the size I wanted at the price I wanted. I found a basket at Joann's (at 50% off!) for the middle shelf and decided to tackle a fabric basket of my own for the bottom shelf. I wanted the dimensions to be around 21" by 20" and 10 1/2" high.
I kind of just jumped in not knowing what I was doing, but here is kind of what I did.

I made plans for figure out how to cut fabric for the outside of the box. I wanted the front of the box to be a patterned fabric (the new colors of my living room) and the rest of the box to be black. In the picture the colored sections meet each other and get sewn together (so green to green, pink to pink, etc) to form the four corners a box shape.

After I had the box shape I cut out pieces from cardboard boxes to make a cardboard box the size I wanted. I hot glued the pieces together. This gives the box its shape and keeps it sturdy.

Next I fitted the fabric over the box. I folded the top edge of the fabric over the box and hot glued it down. I almost left the box like that since you can't see the inside while it is on the shelf.

The inside fabric is all black and was made the same way the outside was only a tad smaller since it is the inside. I used some hot glue to keep the inside fabric in place and finish off the top with a "seam."

Here it is on the shelf. Super easy and way cheaper than buying one!

Desk Transformed into TV Stand Part #2 Big Reveal

You ready for it? Here is a reminder of the before picture.

Here is the big reveal!

It isn't perfect, but I really love the look.
If you haven't seen Part #1 check it out for the background story. Here are the steps of what I did to transform the desk into a tv stand.

1. Sand, sand, sand. This desk had 1 layer of stain and about 2-3 layers of paint under that.

2. Paint. I painted just the desk and not the drawers at first because I had no idea what I wanted to do with the drawers.

3. Tackle the drawers. I kept all of the side drawers and got ride of the middle one to make room for the shelves. These were a pain to sand!

4. At first I was going to leave the drawer handles, but I really wanted a more modern looking piece and the handles didn't fit. They had also been stained with the desk and I didn't really want to take the time to clean them off. Unfortunately the handles were a weird size and I couldn't find new handles that would fit in the holes. I decided to go with knobs instead of handles.

5. I took off the handles and patched the holes (and resanded after that.)

6. To make placement of the knobs easier I made a template to use. I placed the template on the draw as a guide to drill the new hole. Thanks Dad for that suggestion!

7. Shelves. I don't even want to talk about these because they caused me so much trouble! I will say that part of the problem is that it is difficult to put shelves in an area that is not "square" (different measurements at the top and bottom and the back isn't straight). The other part of the problem was me ;) I have never made shelves myself before and learned by trial and error.

Desk Transformed into Television Stand Part #1

Have you ever started a DIY project only to realize it was way bigger than you realized? Being a beginner this is usually what happens to me!

For probably the past year I had been looking around for something to fix up into a tv stand to get rid of my huge tv cabinet that took up too much room. I thought I would use a dresser and had been searching Craigslist. I actually almost bought one, but nothing seemed "just right" and at the right price.
My neighbor was throwing this old desk away because he had tried to stain it and it didn't really turn out right. If you look at the pictures below you can see how uneven the stain is, especially on the side. The desk also had some deep scratches in it and just wasn't in really good shape. When I asked if I could have the desk he laughed, but gave it to me...that's where my journey started. ;)

I was so excited to try to make the desk into a television stand. I started working on it bit by bit during Christmas break. Unfortunately this desk has required a lot of sanding and painting (a little resanding and repainting too) and the weather has been quite rainy and not paint friendly the last few months. So here we are in March and I am SO CLOSE to finally finishing.

Recycled Book Wreath

I put up a hook on my front door a few months ago to hang a Christmas wreath. The Christmas wreath has been packed away for a while and my front door was looking a little empty...so I decided to make a new wreath to pretty up my front door. I have been seeing styrofoam balls or wreaths covered with "roses" made with recycled book pages lately and I love the look. I had a few books in my get-rid-of pile so I decided to give it a try. The idea of ripping apart a book made me cringe a little, but I got over it after making my first few roses. :)

If you make one, be prepared to roll a lot of roses. I estimate about 100 on my wreath. Most of the roses I made using 3 pages put together, but I mixed it up a little by making some with 1 or 2 pages to make some looser and a bit smaller looking roses.

I am not going to write a tutorial because I saw a great one you can use if you are interested in making your own. The blog is Under the table and Dreaming. I did not make mine the same was she did, but the results are pretty much the same.

I don't know if I will leave it on my front door or not. I am a little worried about it getting wet. I really like the end result though!

Weekend Book Review--The Dragon and the Turtle Go On Safari

    Many of my friends have young children and giving a book is one of my favorite gifts to give. Boy books are always harder for me to find so I was excited when I saw The Dragon and the Turtle Go on Safari. I thought it might be a great book to read to a young, adventurous boy. The story is about a dragon and a turtle who camp outside one night. The boys have fun eating baked bugs, making s'mores, and using their imaginations to see different animals such as a rhino that is really a dog and a monkey that is an owl.
     I have to say I was disappointed with this book. First of all the words and phrases used were too difficult for the age this book is intended for. I like when books stretch a child's vocabulary, but there were too many words that needed to be explained. Also many of the phrases seem to use British English. For example, one line says, "Cheerio. Right jolly good spot for us."   I liked how the book portrayed friendship (the friends were supportive and helpful; didn't make fun of each other), but I don't think the theme of "the dark might be frightening, but friendship is stronger than fear," came through very well. The last page has the Bible verse, "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid...God goes with you; he will never leave you." Deuteronomy 31:6. In my opinion this would have been a better theme and could have been woven though the story.
    The one thing I liked about this book is the last page with the Bible verse and other conversation starters for a parent to discuss with their child. I wish more books had these kinds of questions and things to ponder to promote discussion.

Paper Crafting meets Jewelry Making

I love when I can combine crafts that I like together! Today's project is a bracelet made out of wooden mini spools, and strips of designer paper. I didn't take pictures along the way, but the process is really simple if you want to make your own.

Supplies:

1/2 " wooden mini spools (2 packages)

Black acrylic paint

3 pieces of designer paper (I used 3 pieces from a pad of 365 degrees 6x6 paper pad by Pink Paislee)

clear stretch magic cording (7mm)

Mod Podge

Something to apply the Mod Podge with

You can buy all of these supplies at any craft store such as Michaels. Make sure the paper you choose has a small pattern because you only use a tiny piece for each one.

I started out by painting the wooden spools black. After the paint dried I cut the paper to fit. You would be surprised at the small amount paper you need to use--this would be great if you have extra scraps from card or scrapbook projects. I applied the paper with Mod Podge and then also covered the whole spool and paper on the outside to protect. When that was dry I strung the spools with the clear cording. Pretty easy, right?!

I think this bracelet will make a great addition to an outfit with my t-shirt skirt from this post.

I did not come up for the idea for this bracelet. I try to give proper credit when I can, but when I went to where I first saw the bracelet, the picture wasn't there anymore. If this was your idea let me know and I will give you credit!

Weekend Book Review--Sisterchicks in Wooden Shoes

     I was very excited to get to read and review Sisterchicks in Wooden Shoes, because it was written by one of my favorite authors, Robin Jones Gunn. As a teenager I waited impatiently for each book in her Christy Miller series to come out. In my early 20s I did the same with her Glenbrooke series. I resisted reading any of the books in her Sisterchicks series because the characters are in a different season of their lives than I am, but decided to give this one a try.
     The main character, Summer, gets an "abnormal" test result back from the Doctor and decides to live in denial for an extra week and go visit her long time pen-pal, Noelle, in the Netherlands. The two ladies embark on a few crazy adventures while siteseeing that leave them and the reader laughing. Robin Jones Gunn doesn't write her books on a shallow level though and throughout the book we see the characters help each other learn more about themselves (isn't it true that sometimes we know things about close friends/family that they haven't realized about themselves?) and more about trusting God at a deeper level.
    Although I won’t be rushing out to find other books from this series, I enjoyed reading this book. I like how the characters seem like real people that I could sit down and hang out with and how they are struggling with real issues. I also like how the author digs deep and uses her books to help the reader grow as the characters in the book grow.

Rachel and I loved the EK Success booth. They were introducing SMASH books. They had a box with fun props to take pictures with and took a picture of us to put on the Smash wall. They were kind enough to also take a picture with Rachel's camera. I tried to find a link for more information on the SMASH books, but couldn't find one.

Here are a couple of my other favorites besides the Silhouette booth and La-La Land Crafts:

Hero Arts

This booth was so fun to visit. Hero Arts featured new papers that coordinate with some of their stamp sets. As someone who has trouble picking what paper to use with what stamps I really appreciate this! The make-and-take at this booth was my so much fun to make! We stamped 2 flower and 1 leaf image on felt and then cut, added a swirl, and layered. The last touch was a jewel in the middle. I took this home and put an alligator clip on the back and have been wearing it since. I have gotten so many compliments on how cute it looks!

They were also giving out flower pins that Hero Arts fans had made. These were also stamped and then sewed. ADORABLE! I went home and added a clip to this one also. I left the pin on, but will probably not wear it as a pin. My youth group girls told me pinning a flower (or any other pin) on my clothes makes me an old lady ;)

CHA #2 Silhouette

I didn't have much time to take pictures while visiting booths because I was too busy oohing and aahing over all of the cool stuff that is coming out...too bad I can't show you most of it ;) My friend Rachel who I walked around with for a whole day took some amazing pictures (and her camera wasn't bothered by the awful picture lighting) so be sure to check out her blog, Gingerbread Gal, if you want to see more.

My absolute favorite tool that I have to have is the Silhouette! I will save the commercial and send you to the Silhouette site for more details, but it is basically a fancy cutter that can cut all sorts of shapes on fabric, paper, vinyl, heat transfer, contact paper, etc. The possibilities of projects you could use a Silhouette for are endless! The first day their make-and-take was an apron. We got to use the Silhouette to cut out a fancy flower and butterfly on a heat transfer sheet and put it on an apron. The silver parts are the heat transfer that the Silhouette cut out.

I went back the last day to take a picture of this wonderful machine and they were making 3D flowers out of paper...so fun!

CHA Part #1 La-La Land Crafts

As some of you know I got to attend CHA this year and help with the make-and-takes at the La-La Land Crafts booth. What a fun time! La-La Land was a new exhibitor at the show this year and it was exciting to watch people use this company's stamps for the first time and fall in love and also see fans come by and share their excitement. The most popular line is the Marci and Luka stamp line. This little girl and boy can be colored with different skin tones and hair color to look like anyone's daughter, niece, son, grandson, etc. Here is a picture I took of a few of the stamps. I think my favorite has to be Doctor Marci...or maybe Ballerina Marci....but I also like the Sugar 'n Spice Marci....well you get the picture, I can't just pick one ;)

Here also are a few of the cards that were on display at the booth. Don't these stamps look like they are a blast to color?!?! They are!

Sun Stand Still book review

I will hopefully be sharing a few crafty things on my blog this week, but first another book review.

     This one is called Sun Stand Still-What Happens When you Dare to Ask God for the Impossible, by Steven Furtick. The title is based on the story of Joshua who prayed to God for the sun to stand still so that the Israelites could defeat their enemies (Joshua 10:7-14). God answered this seemingly impossible prayer with a "yes." God answering "impossible" prayers doesn't end with Joshua. The author shares stories from both the Bible and modern life where God has answered and done miraculous things. I like the way the author weaves stories into the book along with deep nuggets of truth (like nuggets of gold for your soul). I also like how he challenges the reader over and over again to find out what God could do in his/her life if he/she believed and asked for the impossible.
     Here is a quote from the book that I liked, "On the one hand, I know that God is able to do anything. On the other hand, I think he's willing to do this specific thing. I know God can. And I'm pretty sure that he will. But I can't be completely sure. That's where audacious faith comes in. Audacity is believing that God's promise is bigger than my perhaps."
     I am not sure what audacious faith will look life in my life, but I am challenged to take that question to God and let Him answer that. I need to be willing to step out and obey and trust Him whatever He asks.

Just like the last book, don't read this if you aren't willing to let it change your life. The book calls for action on the reader's part, not just passive reading. :)

Felt Flower Clips

Before Christmas, a friend of mine showed me how to make felt flower pins/hair clips. She had made these flowers with her Bible Study group and thought maybe some of my youth group girls would enjoy making them too. Two of the girls came over during Christmas break and we had a blast making flower pins for winter accessories and flower clips for our hair.

After seeing how easy and fun these were to make I thought they would make a great birthday gift for one of my nieces who loves to play beauty shop with people's hair. Here are the ones I made for her.

I put an alligator clip on the back so she can get them in and out of hair easily (and less painfully for the person whose hair she is using them in ;)

Birthday and Thank You cards

I made a set of cards for my SIL for Christmas. She wanted cards for all occasions. Here are two of the cards that went into the set.

I used stamps from Taylored Expressions for both of these cards. The candles in this card are from the set For the Love of Cupcakes. I am not sure what stamp set the sentiment comes from, but I am pretty sure it is from the same company.

The Dragonfly and flowers in this card come from Discover your Wings The design for this card comes from my friend Jami. She made a set of cards like this with different colors for her niece.

Merry Christmas!

I hope you all had a Merry Christmas yesterday. I was far away from family in terms of physical location, but that didn't stop me from joining in on the festivities. I am so thankful for SKYPE. My family had "me" on a laptop and moved the laptop to let me see everyone open their gifts. It felt like I was there with them. They even took a family picture with me in it!

Does anyone else use SKYPE to talk to family or friends? I think it is one of the best inventions ever (and it is free)!

Book Review: Under the Overpass by Mike Yankoski

I had the wonderful opportunity to choose a book to read and review. I chose Under the Overpass by Mike Yankoski.

I debated reading this book because I knew it would be challenging to read...not challenging in an educational way, but spiritually challenging. I knew going in that I wouldn't be able to just read this book and quickly move on. I was right, but I am so glad that I made the choice to be challenged.

The book is about two college students who decided to challenge themselves to live out their faith by becoming homeless for 5 months in 6 different cities. The author, Mike, realized it was easy to claim Christ as his everything, but he had never had to put that claim to the test while living his middle class life and attending a Christian college. He decided to really live out his faith and step out in a radical way. Mike shares his experiences, thoughts, and emotions of those 5 months Sam and he lived on the streets. I love the deepness and honesty of this book through the laughter and tears, the good and downright awful, the beautiful,ugly and sometimes very stinky.

Don't read this book unless you are willing to be changed, willing to DO something whether what you do to live out your faith has to do with homelessness or not. If you are willing to do that, then this is a must read. :)

Best Toffee Ever

I decided to make a few batches of toffee for my tenants at the apartments as a way to say "Merry Christmas." The recipe is adapted from allrecipes.com. I really like the recipes on that site and this one called, Best Toffee Ever, was definitely a winner! My changes to the recipe and comments are in italics

For this recipe you need:

2 cups butter (My dad recently taught me that you get unsalted for baking and then you add your own salt and this keeps the recipe consistent--thanks dad!)
2 cups white sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips (I used 1 1/2 cups)
1 cup finely chopped almonds (for me 1/2 cup was plenty)

Directions:
1.In a large heavy bottomed saucepan, combine the butter, sugar and salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring until the butter is melted. (For the 2nd batch I partially melted the butter before adding the sugar and salt and liked how that worked) Allow to come to a boil, and cook until the mixture becomes a dark amber color, and the temperature has reached 285 degrees F (137 degrees C). Stir occasionally.

2.While the toffee is cooking, cover a large baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper.

3.As soon as the toffee reaches the proper temperature, pour it out onto the prepared baking sheet. Sprinkle the chocolate over the top, and let it set for a minute or two to soften. Spread the chocolate into a thin even layer once it is melted. Sprinkle the nuts over the chocolate, and press in slightly. Putting a plastic bag over your hand will minimize the mess.

4.Place the toffee in the refrigerator to chill until set. Break into pieces, and store in an airtight container.

Package up and you are ready to go!

A Card Maker's Confession

I love making my own cards. I haven't had the chance to stamp as often as I would like in the past few years, but if given a choice I would much rather send a homemade birthday card to someone than send a store bought one. However, this does not apply to Christmas cards. I have tried to make all of my own Christmas cards, but there are just too many to make...and then pictures and a letter to print out...I get stressed out and end up not sending out any. Solution? Shutterfly! Shutterfly has a great selection of holiday cards in many different styles. I love the ease of just choosing a design and adding my choice of picture(s) to it! I think my favorite card design is "Simple Memories." Those of you who know me know that I love my cards simple and to the point :) I like that the card fits 4 different photos on it.

They also have designs available where you can print your Christmas letter right on the card. Seeing as my printer always seems to have issues when I NEED to get something done, it would be really nice to have the letter right on the card--no extra printing needed!

Or if simple is more your thing, this card leaves 9 spots for short sentences to share what happened throughout the year. If I can think of nine sentences I might use this one!

If you aren't into cards they also have different photo calendars. I haven't gotten a calendar yet because I just think that photo calendars are much cuter when you have kids. :)

Saving Money

I have a lot of time on my hands lately and not a lot of cash so I have been doing what I can to save money and still buy the things I need. A few friends and family members have been asking me to share a money saving tips/how to get free stuff!

1. Swagbucks
Swagbucks is a search engine that gives you swagbucks (points) just for searching. You can redeem those swagbucks for prizes or gift cards. I think that the amazon gift card is the best deal--$5 gift card for 450 swagbucks. I have redeemed two of these gift cards so far since signing up--which comes in handy since I am involved in a book club and get the books from amazon. If you sign up don't get frustrated if you aren't earning a lot of swagbucks right away. Just use the site like you would google and slowly you will see things adding up--it really does work! 2. Before I go shopping or out to eat I do an online search (usually through swagbucks :) ) to see if where I am going is offering any deals or has coupons available. Yesterday I decided to use a gift card I had from Bath and Body Works so I went and checked (just put in a search for "Bath and Body Works coupons") and found a coupon for a free travel size lotion with any purchase. I was going to make a purchase anyways so for me it was a great deal!

3.Ebates
This site is great if you do a lot of online shopping. You get a percentage back for shopping online--% varies by store. They also share deals/coupons that the stores have for online shopping.  Plus you get a $5 sign up bonus when you make your first purchase. I don't do a ton of online shopping so for me earning money on this site has been slow going, but I still think it is worth it. I have heard of many people who love it and earn quite a bit through ebates. With Christmas coming up it might be useful. Click here to check it out.

4. Coupons--Matching coupons to sale prices and deals is a great way to save money or get free items. You don't even need to get the Sunday Paper coupons to score deals, although that is helpful. I get most of my coupons online. I don't have time to search out all the good deals so I depend on others to do that. :) Here are a few websites I like She Saved, Coupon Geek   and Penny Pinchin' Mom   (If you are interested let me know and I can share a few more websites/blogs like these.) I don't think any of these ladies live in my area, but I still have gotten some great deals by reading their blogs and ones like them...including the free full size bottle of shampoo that I got yesterday :)

Sweet Things Challenge

A few Saturdays ago I got to spend an afternoon stamping and laughing with a few very talented stampers. I had never met two of the ladies before that day, but left with two new friends. One of the reasons I like stamping with others is you get to borrow their supplies and try them out! :) While using each other's stamps Jami decided we should have a card challenge. We all had to use the same image on a card to see what we could come up with. We agreed to use Sweet Thing by Penny Black...love this cute little girl with her cupcake!

I tried to challenge myself even more by trying out Taylored Expressions sketch challenge for this card.

Baby Boy--Tie Onesie

I have been working on a gift basket for my friend who is having a baby shower tomorrow. She is having a boy. I think that baby girl things are so much easier than baby boy things. No pink, no ruffles, no bows....what to do?!?! I have seen cute tie onesies for boys lately so I decided to give one a try. I ironed wonder-under on the fabric I was using and then just hand drew my tie onto the back of the wonder-under before cutting it out. I made 2 parts, one is the "knot" and the other the tie hanging down. After you have the tie cut out you just peel the backing off the wonder-under and iron the tie on to the onesie--so easy! I then sewed around the edge of the tie to keep it stuck to the onesie.

I have heard good things about the wonder-under, but I have to say I wasn't impressed. I found it hard to get the backing off and then I had trouble getting it to stick when I ironed it. The project turned out fine, I just wasn't impressed with the stuff. Maybe I did something wrong??

I can't wait to give this to the mom-to-be!

I love this little pin cushion one of my sister-in-laws made for me. She gave it to me a few years ago for Christmas, but it was sitting begging me to take its picture the other day while I was sewing. I love well thought out gifts and I use this one all the time.

With Love to Mom--place mats

Here is a little sneak peak to part of my mom's birthday gift. I haven't mailed the gift yet so hopefully she doesn't come on here, but she knows I can't keep a secret so she will understand. :)
When I was in college I decided I was going to make a quilt. I bought all the cloth and slowly started cutting squares. Well, 6 years later, my fabric container had 3 finished squares and a bunch of uncut fabric from that quilt. I decided that I was never going to finish the quilt and tried to think about how I could use the fabric. The colors of the fabric are a perfect match to my mom's dining room and style so I decided to make her a table runner using the finished squares and extra cloth. Then I made 4 place mats to match the runner.

Today I am only sharing the place mats. I am hoping to have a post with the whole set in a few days. It is just so hard to photograph!

These are very simple to make.
1. Cut 2 pieces 20" x 14.5" (I used 2 different colors, but you don't have to)
2. Cut piece of batting also 20" x 14.5"
3. Pin the layers--batting on the bottom, fabric #1 facing right side up, and fabric #2 facing right side down.
4. Sew with 3/8" seam. Be sure to leave a few inches not sewn so you can turn the fabric right side out.
5. Turn the place mats right side out.
6. Iron
7. Topstitch around at about 1/8" (this closes the few inches you left open before).
8. I also topstitched a second line about an inch in.

No pattern brown shirt

A few weeks ago I tried out making my own shirt (not upcycling) from knit fabric. I didn't take pictures along the way, because I was experimenting and ended up doing a bunch of seam ripping along the way. I didn't use a pattern, I just took a shirt that fits me well and laid it on the fabric and used it as a pattern. Most of the shirt went smoothly, but the neck was supposed to be gathered and that caused a little bit of trouble. I think I ripped the seams out of the neckline 2 times if not 3. But now I am very happy with it and proud of myself for sticking with it!

This picture makes the shirt look pretty plain, but I really like how it turned out.

Halfway with nothing to show

I have been working on a bunch of projects all at the same time, but I have nothing to show for it yet. A few of the things I finished are gifts and will have to wait for sharing and the others are all half finished :) I can show you one of the projects I am in the middle of...

A friend gave me this table with 4 chairs saying she had seen my office chair makeover and knew I could give the table and chairs the little bit of love they needed to fix them up. The white on the table is the backing of a table cloth. The table was stored in a garage and I think the heat made the varnish sticky (very sticky, let me tell you!) and the table cloth stuck to it. I spent most of yesterday trying to get the varnish off the top.

I will share more later when I am finished--the plan is to leave the top looking like wood and paint the legs black. I have seen this look more and more recently and I love it.

After working on the table all day I treated myself to an Italian Beef Sandwhich from Portillos--Yum! This is a Chicago based chain, but I heard that the owner vacationed to CA, and loved it here so he built a Portillo's out here too. I don't know if that is true, but I am so glad I can get my fill of Italian beef without having to fly to Chicago every time. :)

A look back at my very first tutorial

I was perusing blogs this weekend when I came across this blog. The blog first of all caught my eye because the blog is having a giveaway (check it out!), but I also really like that the blogger has a feature called "Sunday Favorites," where every Sunday she posts an old blog post of her own that she likes. What a fun idea! I have so many posts that I look back and laugh at or have forgotten I even wrote. I decided to join in and share this blog post from November of 2008--my very first tutorial. I know you can hardly call it a tutorial, but I was so proud of myself when I wrote it. :)

Cowgirl Carrie and a Tutorial
A few weekends ago I went out with a group of friends and did some country line dancing...well I attempted to anyways. I think that the only dance I am good at is the electric slide, which actually goes well with quite a few country songs! I don't know what part of the brain makes a person able to pick up dance moves, but mine is underdeveloped whatever it is. I can follow along if I watch long enough, but if I am next to a person who is dancing fancy moves it messes me up for the whole song--so I spent quite a few songs on the sidelines trying to figure out the moves. It was a blast though!

When looking through the Rubber Romance stamps at eP I saw a great cowgirl named "Carrie" that I knew would be perfect for cards for my country loving friends. So here is what I came up with.

This card was pretty easy to make, but took quite a bit of time. I know the picture really doesn't show it, but the shirt, arm, cowboy hat, and boots are all paper pieced on. To make the wall I masked Carrie,sponged So Saffron and stamped Weathered. I sponged the floor and drew in hard wood flooring.

The photo corners are a fun little addition and very easy to make. Since I am borrowing a friend's camera for the day I thought I would do my first tutorial to show you how to make them. (click on any "how to" picture to enlarge)

Photo Corner Tutorial

Step 1: Cut a piece of cardstock 2" x 2"

Step 2: Cut the square piece in half from corner to corner. This gives you the two pieces that will be your two photo corners.

Step 3: Take corner A and fold it to meet corner C.

Step 4: Take corner B and fold it to meet corner C.

Step 5: Take your scissors to cut across from corner to corner (you will cut off corners A, B, and C by doing this)

Step 6: Flip pieces over and wrap around any corner.

Snuggly Baby Blanket

It seems to be baby season again so I have been making many baby shower gifts. Here is a simple baby blanket 36 x 36 (well mine is 34 x 36 because of a stubborn corner that wouldn't lay right, long, frustrating story :) ). I wanted the blanket to be 2 layers, but I thought that living in CA two layers of flannel might be too much, so I went with flannel and cotton. The animal side is flannel and the blue polka dots side is cotton. A couple of burp rags to match will be coming soon. :)

To make this blanket all you need to do is measure out 2 pieces of cloth 36" x 36" Lay them RIGHT sides together and sew around the outside with a 5/8 in seam. Sew all but about 4" so that you can flip the blanket right side out. After you flip the blanket you sew the 4" gap and keep going all around the outside and about 3/8".

My problem came in because the flannel was stretchy and the cotton wasn't--so if you use 2 different fabrics be sure they match up perfectly and use a lot of pins to hold it. :)

Going Green--Reusable grocery shopping bag

I feel a little bit guilty every time I get home from the grocery store and empty my pile plastic grocery bags and add them to my stash. I do reuse those bags for other things, but I have a lot of them and I don't need them all. I started out recently by asking for no bags for things I can carry--like if I am only getting a few items at a store or with gallons of milk. A few weeks ago one of my SIL showed me this tutorial that was perfect for me and my many extra bags issue. :) ---Reusable shopping totes made from sheets. I didn't follow the tutorial all the way, but used it as a guide.

I didn't have any old sheets lying around so when I was at the thrift center I browsed the linen section and found a flat sheet that I fell in love with! I don't know the size, but it is bigger than a twin so I think that I can get 3 or 4 bags from one sheet.

I threw a book and a few stamps sets in to show how roomy it is. If you click to enlarge, please ignore all the threads hanging--I was so excited to take pictures I didn't stop to cut them all first!

I realized how useful it is when I threw a bunch of envelopes in it to go mail them at the post office and I decided it makes a nice regular tote too. :)

Wild Animal Park Pics

I gave myself a mini-vacation this week and headed to San Diego to spend some time with friends and head to the Wild Animal Park. What a relaxing and fun time. Here are a few pics. All taken with my Canon Powershot. :)

This baby elephant was just born in February. So cute!

The Park has a special butterfly exhibit going on. The line was long to get it, but it was worth it!

I went to the thrift store the other day hoping for some deals. This store is my least favorite thrift store, but they have good sales at times. The sale for that day was 20 articles of clothing (without lines on their tags) for $5.50. Pretty sweet deal...except that it didn't take me long to realize that most of the clothes I would want had lines on them and therefore were not on sale. I did however find some clothes that I have big plans for repurposing! Here is the first one. I made it for me, but it would be so easy to make a kids version.

I don't have a before picture, but this skirt was 2 red shirts with a logo on the front pocket area and high on the back so I had to work around these areas. The first shirt I cut to make the main skirt and the second shirt I cut into 4" strips and sewed on the main skirt (no hemming or serging on the layers). The picture is from before I washed it. After it was washed the layers curled a bit giving a new cool look. I will try to get a picture of that soon.

Chair makeover

When I first moved to California I drove here in a car with all of my stuff. Whatever didn't fit in the car, didn't come. So, needless to say, I did not come with any furniture. After my dad and I moved all of the boxes into my new place we went to sit down only to discover that there was nothing to sit on besides the floor! That day we went thrift store shopping and I came home with my first piece of furniture...this chair.

Pretty? No it is not. But it has sentimental value (and is comfy) so I have kept it.
I decided it was time to fix up the chair and "pretty it up" to match the room it is in. I sanded it and gave it a good paint job (to match the desk I use it with) and recovered the seat with upholstery fabric. I think it looks much better after its makeover. What do you think?

T-shirt quilt--Using those old t-shirts

I finished this quite a while ago, but I don't think I ever shared it.
I have been volunteering at a jr. high camp called Camp Dunamis since I was in high school and every year we get a new t-shirt with the theme from that year on it. I love these shirts and wear them often, but I was collecting quite a collection. Camp Dunamis is so close to my heart so I didn't want to get rid of the shirts (even though a few were stained and unwearable.) I decided to make a quilt out of the shirts. It started with cutting 12" squares from the shirts, and then I got scared I would ruin the shirt pieces trying to make the quilt...and so the squares sat for a while until I decided I was ready to attempt the quilt. I have to admit my mom helped me a lot with this with the measurements and figuring out exactly how to do it.

It doesn't match my living room, but this quilt often finds itself on the couch keeping me warm. :)

Old skirt made new!

Am I the only one that has a container of clothes that will fit again "when I lose a few pounds"? I had a long skirt in the container that truthfully hasn't fit for a while. I decided that even if it fit I wasn't going to wear it like it was. So I decided to play around and see what I could do.
Here is the before picture:

A knee length skirt that fits!

7 Easy steps along the way
1. Measure the length you want the skirt to be and add 2 1/4 inches for seam allowance/waistband
2. Cut straight across at measured length. The bottom seam will stay the same, don't cut it off.

3. Fold fabric 1/4 in and sew a straight stitch to keep the fabric from unraveling.

4. Fold fabric 2 inches to make a casing for the elastic (I used 1 1/2 in. elastic) and sew 1/4 inch from the edge of the fold on the inside of the skirt. Be sure to leave a 2 inch section not sewn so you can feed in the elastic.

5. Measure and cut elastic to fit your waist.
6. Safety pin the end of the elastic and use that to feed the elastic all the way around the skirt.
7. Sew the 2 ends of elastic together and sew the 2 inch opening.

Here it is. Not the best photo. I had been wearing the skirt all day so it is a bit wrinkly.
