ESV Family Devotional Bible Review and Giveaway.

I think it is so important to read the Bible with your kids from a young age.  When I was a child we read a chapter from the Bible and discussed it every night after dinner.  It taught me the importance of knowing God's word and promoted the habit of consistent Bible reading and seeking God through His word.  It is a habit my husband and I have continued.
Sometimes it is hard for young kids to understand what is going on in different Bible stories.  That is one of the reasons I really like the ESV Family Devotional Bible.  The Bible retells 130 stories with colorful illustrations.

The ESV Family Devotional Bible is designed to help families read and apply God’s Word together. This full-color edition features the complete ESV text interspersed with engaging illustrations and gospel-centered devotions related to key Bible stories—guiding families through the entirety of God’s Word over the course of a year. Each devotion also includes discussion questions and suggestions for additional reading, helping families develop a habit of reading the Bible together and applying its truth to all of life.

Things I like about this Bible:

*The stories are easy to understand.  They are a simple retelling of the Bible story.

*Each retelling also has 3 questions and a key verse.

*The whole Bible is there.  You can choose to read the Bible with the devotional stories or without.

*I like that it has illustrations to help the reader picture how the scenes might have looked.  One thing I don't care for is that I think the characters look more caucasian than Hebrew/Jewish.

I would definitely recommend this Bible for families.  If you are interested in finding out more or getting a copy for yourself you can check out these links:

The League and the Lantern Review and Giveaway

There are a lot of young adult books out there, but sometimes it is hard to find good books with appropriate topics for preteens/early teens.  The book I get to share with you today was written by a concerned dad who couldn't find quality entertainment for his kids so he wrote his own!  He decided to be a part of the solution to give kids adventure books that also have humor and reinforce character values such as friendship and compassion.

"The League and the Lantern begins when a dangerous organization invades Jake Herndon's seventh-grade sleepover.  He escapes along with two classmates, Lucy and TJ, only to face a 48-hour fight for survival on the streets of Chicago.  the kids unravel a mystery dating back to the Civil War and discover an incredible secret about Jake's family.  Along the way they learn unexpected lessons about courage, and family and friendship"

The League and the Lantern, by Brian Wells, is the first book in an adventure series.  When I finished the book I wished that I had the next one too.  I can't wait to keep reading in this series!

Here are some things I liked:

*The characters were relatable and likable.  Jake is an awkward almost 7th grader who is trying to recover from a horrible and embarrassing 6th grade year.  All 3 of the main characters are kids who don't really fit in to the popular crowd.  I think many readers will be able to relate to that.  I also liked the references to super heroes and classic movies (Princess Bride).

*It was an exciting, fast-paced book.  I didn't want the story to end.

*The author took 140 of the top vocabulary words that middle schoolers need for success and wove them into the book. That might sound boring, but I knew that before starting to read and still did not notice that fact when reading.  It was very well done.

*Every time a book is bought, an identical book is donated to a child who couldn't otherwise afford a copy of their own!

If you want to know more, you need to check out the website, https://leagueandlantern.com
The website has some fun bonus material including more info on the vocabulary words and where to find the Honest Abe donuts from the story :)  You can also order your own copy of the book there.  Also available on Amazon.

NONE LIKE HIM review and giveaway

I am so excited to get to share this book with you.  None Like Him, by Jen Wilkin is a book about 10 ways that God is different from us and why that is a good thing!  Let me share with you the description I got before reading the book:

God is self-existent, self-sufficient, eternal, immutable, omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent, sovereign, infinite, and incomprehensible.
We're not.
And that's a good thing.
Our limitations are by design.  we were never meant to be God  But at the root of every sin is our rebellious desire to possess attributes that belong to God alone.
Calling us to embrace our limits as a means of glorifying God's limitless power, Jen Wilkin invites us to celebrate the freedom that comes when we rest in letting God be God.

I have to admit that I am not finished reading the book.  I am usually one that reads a book in one day, but this book is more like a devotional.  It is meant to be dug into and pondered and prayed over.  Each chapter shares an attribute of God.  I love that the author shares many little stories to explain and help the reader understand.  I like stories because they help me remember what I read and relate it to life.  Another thing I like is that at the end of each chapter are Bible verses to look at, reflection questions, and a prayer.

I really enjoyed the book.  I think it would be great to read on your own, or to be discussed with a small group.  It made me really reflect on who God is and who I am.
